3 Super Easy Pottery Glazing Techniques

The best successes have the simplest solutions.

A college art professor once told me that some of the most famous songs are only comprised of 3 chords. Hits like Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and who can forget the one of our all time favorites Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC are all based upon 3 chords.

I'm always applying everything to art. Simple palettes, 3 colors, Simple techniques 3 steps. I keep it very simple so you can do it with success.

So here you go, 3 really easy pottery glazing techniques that will bring beautiful results. These are so easy, you can even bring the kids along and let them try them too!

1. The Sticker Technique

1.The Sticker Technique

So simple, we do this with some of our younger field trips. Find some stickers of shape, like hearts and stars. Letter shapes are great for sayings and names. Apply them on any dry piece of pottery. Then apply three layers of your favorite pottery glaze. Let dry, and carefully remove the stickers. One of our wooden skewers come in really handy for gentle sticker removal (see #2 below for another wooden skewer trick)

2. Sgraffito AKA Scratch Art

Paint any piece of pottery with a single light color, or mix it up and paint in rainbow stripes.Apply each color two times allow to dry. Then apply two layers of a solid glaze, on top of these colors, preferably darker than your other colors. The fan brush or a large mop brush works for applying solid glaze to pottery. Allow to dry and Grab that wooden skewer once again. Scratch away in swirls, shapes, zig zags to reveal the colorful glazes under the top color. This is a great solution for ZENTANGLE Fans.

3. Sponge Technique

Our sponges come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They add texture to any piece. and make color blending real simple. We always suggest start with light colors and blend into darker shades. Sponging leaves a heavier application of glaze, and often only needs two layers for a strong outcome. An easy way to apply this technique, is to use colors that will blend well and often make a third color, such as red —> yellow, which will make hints of orange in between.

Try these techniques during our regular store hours, you never need an appointment to paint pottery with us. Or make a reservation for our June ADULT NIGHT OUT, and enjoy a complimentary dinner buffet from Mo’Nelisa Italian Restaurant.
